What kinds of infectious diseases do wild animals carry? How do they affect humans?
Most wild animals do carry disease that are dangerous to humans. Certain wildlife carry such diseases as rabies, Salmonella (food poisoning), Rat-bite Fever, Toxoplasmosis, Raccoon Roundworm, Histoplasmosis, and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.
- Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a toxoplasma that invade the skin and may cause major harm to the central nervous system especially in small children.
- Histoplasmosis is a respiratory disease. It is caused by a spore found in bat and bird feces. It mainly affects the lungs and can resemble tuberculosis. Some symptoms are high fever, fatigue, pains in the chest, and a dry cough.
- Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a bacterial illness. It is caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis and can be obtained through the bite or scratch of a rodent or the ingestion of food or water contaminated with rat droppings.
- Raccoon Roundworm is a parasitic worm that lives in the raccoon’s intestinal tract. Humans usually become infected by ingesting the worm’s eggs through inadvertent contact with raccoon feces. To raccoons, the worm is harmless but it can produce severe central nervous system disease in humans, including encephalitis which is inflammation and bleeding of the brain.
- Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a fatal disease transmitted by infected rodents through saliva, feces, or urine. Humans can get infected by inhaling the aerosolized virus. HPS is not common, but it does have the potential to be lethal. Rodent control is the best way to prevent Hantavirus infection.
